Laddie John Dill with Michael Straus

Laddie John Dill is an LA based artist who was at the forefront of the “Light and Space” movement in the late sixties. In 1971 he had his first solo show at Ileana Sonnabend’s gallery in New York City. Since then Dill’s work has been shown and celebrated internationally. Early in the fall Michael Straus spoke with Dill on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition at Malin Gallery. The conversation that follows touches upon Dill’s early artistic development, his work as an educator, and his careful consideration of how architecture functions in the context of his sculptures.

Emily Mae Smith with Amanda Gluibizzi

In our perpetual mind/body predicament and our philosophical, and even ontological inquiries, we constantly pose countless distinctions: What are our mental states? What are our physical states? We similarly ask ourselves: How do we define our consciousness, or our intentionality, and how do both relate to our mind and body? Additionally, we tend to ask ourselves, especially when no one is near, what is the self? How is it related to our mind and body?

Balance of Stories

I asked the writers gathered in this section to choose a photograph and write a narrative based on it. How they defined “narrative” was up to them; they could borrow from any genre, including biography, history, memoir, and the news. I wanted to bring to fore the idea that a critic is, in the best sense, also a storyteller.
