Field Notes
Save the Bay View!

Every month, the unrelenting commitment of the staff of one plus a few volunteers at the San Francisco Bay View National Black Newspaper manages to eke out just one more issue of this crucially important publication, to elevate and champion the voices and campaigns of those folks most ignored, repressed, and criminalized.
Will you come together in a mighty show of unity and dig however deep to help raise $20,000 for the San Francisco Bay View?
As we move into 2020 and beyond, it is vitally important that we sustain this national platform to ensure that revolutionary, visionary voices and ideas have a place in the socio-political dialogue for liberation, justice, and peace!
Did you know the SF Bay View was instrumental in the success of the historic California Hunger Strikes of 2013, which drew 30,000 participants at their peak and led to ending indefinite solitary confinement in California prisons? And that all the principled leaders of the hunger strike and co-authors of the “Agreement to End Hostilities,” continue to be retaliated against for having the audacity to challenge the CDCr system and fight for their human rights? The SF Bay View must be here to promote the Libterate The Caged Voices Coalition: Free All Hunger Strike Representatives. Promote the Prisoner Human Rights Movement, and to help in this protracted and ongoing struggle.
Did you know the SF Bay View, despite the ire of the FBI and risking censorship, unflinchingly publishes the work of Comrade Malik of the End Prison Slavery in Texas Movement, who continues to serve the people with his scathing exposés of abusive prison conditions, violations of human rights and corruption on both sides of the wall? The San Francisco Bay View must be here to continue to elevate his voice and journalistic prowess to the national and international stage, and provide support for organizations and individuals working to Free Malik!
Did you know the SF Bay View will be the home of Comrade Malik, a regular contributor to The Brooklyn Rail, upon his release in 2021? And that even now he is acting assistant editor? I know there’s a lot of love out there for Comrade Malik, so you can see this as not only an investment in a crucially important newspaper to uplift his voice and others, but also we gotta talk about stuff like reentry issues.
What happens when folks get out? What kinds of services are available to them? What kinds of opportunities are available to them? Well here’s an opportunity right here! An investment in the Bay View is an investment in the success of a returning comrade.
So Dig Deep! Did you know the SF Bay View must remain in print form? That just going digital would completely undermine those voices and grassroots work of thousands of unsung heroes in California’s Bay Area in particular, and across Americ’s hoods adn communities and here's why:
For 44 years, the SF Bay View has remained undaunted in its commitment to being a powerful Network for Freedom Fighters and a platform for Liberation Journalism, despite the hardships. Please help us continue this legacy for the next many years to come. Dig deep!
One last thing, want to know why the SF Bay View must remain in print form? Hear them:
A prisoner in California writes: “The person next cell down asked me if I’d like to read your newspaper … and guess what? I didn’t put it down till I read the whole paper. I loved it.” From Georgia: “I share the paper with countless people, making the younger ones aware of injustice.” From Pennsylvania: “Thank you for the opportunity of getting to know so many others’ struggles, to be able to see that when I am having a bad day that one of my brothers or sisters may have it worse.” From Florida: “The Bay View is an oasis of answers in a desert of questions.” From Texas: “I am in deep gratitude to you for seeing the light in me and giving me a chance to shine.”
$25,000 in 2020, let’s do this!
Many thanks to The Brooklyn Rail for their support of this fundraising effort realized by Comrade Malik.
