While British artist Sarah Tulloch was completing her undergraduate degree in fine art, she inherited a collection of photographs from her grandfather, an amateur photographer whom she hadn’t known very well because he lived in Australia and she in the United Kingdom.
Photographer Lauren Greenfield’s Generation Wealth resembles base aspirational coffee-table fare. The book is bound in silky golden fabric, its spine like an ingot. On the front and back covers are pictures of luxury served up a variety of ways: an oligarch’s family; a rap star’s diamond-encrusted grills; gilt purses slung low on trophy wives’ toned arms.
At one point in his introduction to The documenta 14 Reader, curator Adam Szymczyk refers briefly to Artaud’s “theater and its double.” Since Documenta’s most recent iteration wraps up its showing this month in both Athens and Kassel, his off-hand allusion most likely privileges the “double” in the phrase.
