Call it Punk Rockhausen: Excepter

The band was several minutes into their set before I realized they had started. At first I thought it was the beer—I was a couple of drinks in at that point, as it was well after 1:00 a.m. on a weeknight. But that wasn’t it.

Steve Lehman Makes History

Steve Lehman is not the first jazz musician with a Ph.D. in composition—that distinction probably belongs to Mel Powell—nor is he the first to make jazz with the formal and structural tools of the Western classical tradition.

Of Circles and Motions of the Others

An always interesting, often mesmerizing, study in contrasts, the 2014 MATA Festival’s closing concert subverted expectations from the start. In Tai Chi (2013), Chinese composer Ke Xu sought to peer inside the body, limning escalating tension and propulsive release in successive waves of sound.
