The road, golden with leaves heavy from the water fallen down onto the earth, wound its way among the immovable web of dry twigs and piled up tree stumps from which slipped twisted threads, uprooted among the black crouching of solitary birds and a brown cracking of clods, under a hawk, with wings motionless in the condensing of the superimposed gray, from whose horizon, the filmy red of other worlds, other skeletal woods peeped out, rows of vines without leaves, abandoned houses through whose stone windows, devoid of light, witness a black, carnal, fixed nakedness.

2 excerpts from a memoir in progress

I get up just like everyone else and I eat a day-old donut and drink a cup of coffee. You can buy two day-old donuts on the corner for fifteen cents. We’re talking March 1971, if you want to know exactly. I’m living on Oak Street, in San Francisco, right across from The Panhandle, a half-block from Golden Gate Park.

Last Day We Fish

Left to right: Bill, Cub and I are sitting on the roof of the dairy. We’re like clocks, with our sticky legs hung over the edge like this, swinging back and forth. Bill’s got the end of his string wound up on his wrist so his hand is fat and purple-full of blood.

Their books include Safari Monseigneur and La Poubelle de la Place Vendôme published by L'Association, and La Grande Odalisque with Bastien Vivès. Barrel of Monkeys, winner of the Best Newcomer Award at the 2007 Angoulême International Comics Festival, has been published this year in the U.S. by Rebus Books.
