you can’t drag the body of a dead enemy

the idea of a street and mental illness or
abstract truth with lowly physical footnotes
what diagnosis might come screaming any other sky
here lies sudden unexplained adult death syndrome
flying to a secret location to shoot you in the face
as a kind of sport
there is too much detail to process and thus no end
that excludes the way everything is exactly now
flat and measured by the gray roadside the ride
to work the heart strings
the dominant literacy is extremely close
things are all the size of an entire world
invisible or rendered as the ground for
walking god’s stupid earth
forgive me father for I have not captured
a pterodactyl in time for this year’s joyathon
as I promised I would at last year’s joyathon
but my faith is strong
there is a finally great range to ride on considering
he animal shaped cloud off the coast connects
the landscape with a riot of the mind
to be young in the eyes

In her first US solo show, Riptide at Charles Moffett, Julia Jo embarks on a journey of self-discovery, examining interpersonal relationships in figural paintings that are obscured with swirls of body parts, hints of objects, and glimpses of interiors. Jos works are all intimate, rooted in the artists own experiences of moving from Seoul, her birthplace, to the US, where she has continuously relocated, a journey that left her with truncated relationships, miscommunications, and in a constant state of reintroduction and reinvention.

The world has changed because we are all living in a more dangerous state. There is no place to hide and no place to escape. Where you stand is where you fight. Hope and despair are intertwined endlessly, they dissolve and complete each other. If hope is presented as "once upon a time", this past time can be put into the present as disappointment and desperation, at the same time it can also stimulate new imagination.

Time plays a funny role in Aziz + Cuchers latest exhibition, Youre Welcome and Im Sorry, at Gazelli Art House. The show features new works on canvas and a sampling of multimedia pieces that span their thirty30-year collaboration. It isnt so much of a retrospective as it is a kinetic force that distills a shared ethos within layers of satire. Installed across two floors, the works seem to suggest that there is a glitch in the fabric of society, where someone keeps alternating between pressing the fast-forward and rewind button.

Discussions of spirituality have long been missing from the discourse on contemporary art. This act of erasure limits our perception of the art we seek to embrace. It imposes a Western, secular lens on the work of Asian American and other marginalized artists who evoke faith traditions. Skewing away from this lens allows space for an eruption of multiple cultural, gender, and psychic layers, dual consciousness, traversing borders, and integrating fragments of self otherwise obscured by opaque whiteness.
